A genre is a category within an art forms. We use genre to talk about the arts, like music, painting, literature and film.

You can also use the words type, kind or sort.
All of these question mean the same thing:
What is your favourite genre of film?
What is your favourite type of film?
What is your favourite kind of film?
What is your favourite sort of film?
Because we are talking about films, it is more percise to use the term genre.
