‘Genre’ means ‘type’.
Someone might ask you what kind of movie you like. Or they might phrase it ‘what are your favourite genres?’.
A genre is a category within art forms. We use genre to talk about the arts, like music, painting, literature and film.
SYNONYMS:
You can use the words type, kind or sort interchangeably.
All of these question mean the same thing:
What is your favourite genre of film?
What is your favourite type of film?
What is your favourite kind of film?
What is your favourite sort of film?
Because we are talking about films, it is more precise to use the term genre.
