Let’s learn when to use the prepositions IN, ON, and AT in English.

A tip to help you remember which one to use is that in general, we use IN to refer to big things, ON for medium things, at AT for small and specific things. This trick works when you are talking about both places and times.

IN + Places
continents
countries
departments/states/provinces
cities
neighbourhoods
located IN a contained space
transportation by car, truck or small boat

ON + Places
streets/avenue/corners
located ON a flat surfaces
transportation (see exceptions above)

AT + Places
specific address
specific place
located AT a place temporarily

IN + times
years and long periods of time (Example: In my youth)
months
seasons
the morning/afternoon/evening
the past/ the future


ON + times
days of the week
specific dates -flat surfaces
special days (on Christmas day)

AT + times
specific time
sunrise/sunset/dawn/dusk/noon/midnight
night
