Chess Vocabulary:

VOCABULARY
BEGINNER
Find the chess pieces – A quick letter soup vocabulary review game
INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED
to capture – to take an opponent’s piece
to castle – a special move of king to G1/8 and rook to F1/8
to adjourn – to pause the game with the intention of continuing it at another time
to interpose – to put a piece between an attacking piece and its target
to promote – to exchange a pawn for a queen
to counter/counterattack – to attack in response to an opponent’s attack
to forfeit – to lose by not following the rules
a fork – an attack where two of the opponent’s pieces are under threat, and the opponent has no choice but to lose one or the other
check – a warning that the king is under threat
gardez – a warning that the queen is under threat
a checkmate – a winning move where the king will be captured regardless of where it moves
a stalemate – a draw, where neither player can win the game
a gambit – the sacrifice of a pawn or other minor piece in order to gain an advantage(in daily life – a calculated move or remark intended to start a conversation)
