Count and Noncount Nouns

Can we count bottles? Of course we can. I see one, two, three bottles.

Can we count water? No, we can’t. Water is one thing. It rains down, collects in rivers, lakes and oceans, and evaporates back up into the sky, but it is still one thing.

Noncount nouns are things that are, or are considered to be one thing. They are things we need to break apart into units or containers in order to have something to count.
