The Present Simple – Form and Usage

The Present Simple is the first tense that English students learn. Let’s talk about why and how we use it!

When do we use the Present Simple?

1.) We use it to talk about general truths and facts.

Water freezes at 0 degrees.

Thomas likes pizza.

2.) We use it for habits, repeated actions, and permanent situations.

We always visit my grandparents on Sundays.

I eat lunch at noon.

3.) We use it to talk about fixed schedules.

The train leaves at 6:00 PM.

Classes start next week. (Notice that we can use it to refer to the future, if it a fixed time.)

How do we form the Present Simple?

The verb to be works differently than other verbs in English, so let’s look at this verb first.
