Role Plays for Everyday English

Let’s do some role plays to practice everyday English!

Food – Dining and Grocery Shopping

1.) Call a restaurant and make a reservation – You are planning a birthday party, and want to invite six friends. The birthday-boy is allergic to nuts. Two of your guests are vegetarian, and one is gluten-intolerant.

2.) Order your meal, as well as that of one of your vegetarian friends who does not speak English.

The server: Our starters today are stuffed mushroom with roasted tomato and bacon, French onion soup, or a chef salad with our house dressing.

3.) You are at a grocery store, and can’t find three items that you need. Ask the clerk where to find whole-wheat flour, apple cider vinegar, and honey. Once the clerk has directed you, you notice that the ‘honey’ is not genuine bee honey. Speak to the clerk again.

Clothing – Shopping

1.) You are looking for a new, blue suit jacket for work. Speak to the clerk.

Visit the store.

2.) Once you get home, you realize that the colour doesn’t go well with the rest of the outfit. Talk with the clerk again to exchange it for a different one.

Asking for and Giving Directions

1.) You need an ATM but don’t know where the nearest bank is. Ask someone on the street. Try this activity a few times, asking for different locations.

Find a scene to use.

2.) You are in a taxi and want to go to your hotel. Give the driver the address and guide him or her to your destination.

Going to the Doctor

1.) You have a health issue and see medical attention. Call and speak with the receptionist to book an appointment. Try to get the appointment as soon as you can.

2.) Meet with the doctor.
