1.) Remember that we use these tenses together to talk about an interruption in the past.

2.) The order of the sentence doesn’t necessarily follow the order of events.
Something was happening (Past Continuous) and then something else interrupted it (Past Simple).
Something interrupted (Past Simple) something else that was happening (Past Continuous).
