Usage of the Present Continuous

The Present Continuous Tense refers to actions that are occurring now, and to current, temporary events. A common error is to confuse the Present Continuous with the Present Simple. Remember that the main usage of the Present Simple is to talk about routines and things that occur over a long period of time.

Sometimes, you can use either form:

We live in New York. – This Present Simple sentence means that New York is our home.

We are living in New York. – This Present Continuous sentence means that we are living in New York at the moment, but that that it isn’t our permanent home.

We also use the Present Continuous to talk about definitive plans in the future. Add a time clause to indicate that you are referring to a future event.

Negative
Subject + to be + not + verb(ing)
You are not eating.

To be + subject + verb(ing)
