The WIN Technique in Arguments

How to argue, argue, fighting fair, WIN technique

Learn the WIN technique and role play to practice arguing in English.

We use the WIN technique to express our feelings clearly, state our case succinctly, and minimize conflict. It’s a way to define and assert our boundaries clearly.

WIN stands for When you…/ I feel…/ I need

Here’s how it works

When you… – State the exact behaviour that you won’t tolerate.
feel… – State the emotional impact the behaviour has on you.
need… – Be clear about what you need to happen instead.

For example:
When you raise your voice, I feel intimidated. I need you agree that you won’t yell at me ever again, no matter what.

Vocabulary you need to use this technique
1.) You need to be able to identify feelings in English.
2.) You might find it useful to know vocabulary for values.

Role plays

Take turns thinking of situations where you need to talk to people about their behaviour, and role play using WIN.

One of you has been doing something that the other finds insupportable.
What is the scenario?
Who are the characters?

Feel free to come up with your own ideas. Otherwise, select one:
1.) Someone eats off your plate.
2.) Someone doesn’t listen to you.
3.) Someone takes your things without asking.
4.) Someone stands you up.
5.) Someone owes you money and wants to borrow more.
6.) Someone talks about you behind your back.
7.) Someone is condescending.
8.) Someone drops by uninvited.
