Borders, Boundaries, and Limits

The terms borders, boundaries, and limits have similar meanings, so it is easy to get them confused. Let’s sort it out together!

Boundary – a line that marks the limit or extent of something
Border – a line that goes around the outer edge of something
Limit – the greatest amount of something that is possible or sufficient
To encompass – to contain, include, or surround something
To consent – to give assent (to accept and agreement to something)
To encroach – to take control of something in a gradual, unnoticeable way

To be out of bounds – beyond the bounds of morality or civility/off limits
To be beyond the pale – outrageous behaviour that is generally considered unacceptable

What’s the difference between a boundary and a border?

Both boundary and border refer to the outer edge of something. Here is how to tell them apart:

Borders refer to countries and state power.
Boundaries refer to areas within countries and between individuals.

Borders are clearly defined and enforced.
Boundaries are the limit to which we allow others to encroach.

Can you these words to their definitions, and use each one in a sentence?
