Types of Government
Democracy – In Democratic systems, power is held by the people, who are represented by elected officials. The majority rules, while the rights of the minority are also respected.
Authoritarian – In Authoritarian systems power is help by a single person or by a small group. People have little autonomy and freedom.
Totalitarian – A totalitarian government is a type of authoritarian system, justified by a national ideology. Other belief systems are supressed.
Dictatorship – A dictatorship is an extreme type of Authoritarian government, ruled by a single dictator. The word dictator has a negative connotation, and is associated with oppression and human rights abuses.
Oligarchy – People are governed by a small, elite group.
Monarchy – People are ruled by a monarch, usually a king or queen. Power is inherited.
